Although surgical oncology is a slowly growing field (there are about 2000 members of the SSO) cancer surgery is still a staple of general surgery as well as its offoots (particularly thoracic, breast, GI and colorectal surgery). The Surgical Oncology Handbook (formerly the MD Anderson Surgical Oncology Handbook) is by far the most widely used surgical oncology resource. The book emphasizes multidisciplinary treatment planning, including therapy sequencing. Surgical residents use the handbook widely, often to study for their exams, and some departments buy multiple copies to make sure one is always accessible. The new edition will update all protocols and staging and will include new information on radiation therapy, neuro-oncology, clinical trials. Multi-modality treatment, always a strength of the book and MD Anderson as an institution, will be further increased.
