Summary

The country found itself mired in depression as campaigning began for the 1932 presidential election. The incumbent president. Republican Herbert Hoover, had taken several measures to try to end the depression; although these did little to stimulate the national economy, Republicans proclaimed the worst over during the campaign. The Democratic Party united behind Franklin D. Roosevelt, former governor of New York, who offered a "New Deal" to the American people. In The Election of 1932 and the Administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, historian Frank Freidel examines a campaign that prefaeed "one of the most fruitful eras of reform and modernization in American history." Book jacket.
