Summary

Scholars have called the Whig Party's 1840 Log Cabin campaign "a landmark in the carnivalization of American elective politics." The Whigs, under the leadership of Thurlow Weed, Thaddeus Stevens, and Thomas Corwin, created a national campaign organization to compete with the well-established Democrats. Whig candidate William Henry Harrison, a hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe and a prosperous landowner, was presented to the voters as a common man of the people, who had lived in a log cabin. In The Election of 1840 and the Harrison/Tyler Administrations, Princeton University professor Sean Wilentz discusses the events of this important campaign and its impact on American political history.
